**WILLIMANTIC, CT** – An independent study will be conducted to assess the need for a birthing center in the Windham Hospital catchment area, the Office of Health Strategy (OHS) announced. The study, to be conducted by Guidehouse, Inc., will begin this week and will be completed in approximately four months.
The study will analyze the need for a birthing center, engage community members and consumers through interviews and focus groups, and review national birthing center standards and financial viability.
The study was mandated by a settlement agreement reached in December 2023 between the OHS and Windham Hospital, which allowed the hospital to terminate its inpatient obstetric services. The agreement stipulated that Windham Hospital would study the need for a birthing center and commit to operating one if necessary.
Guidehouse is expected to present its findings and recommendations at a community forum, with a final report due in the summer.
