Mon Oct 07 10:32:46 UTC 2024: ## Nobel Prize in Medicine Awarded to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for MicroRNA Discovery

**Stockholm, Sweden** – The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet has announced that the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to **Victor Ambros** and **Gary Ruvkun** for their groundbreaking discovery of microRNA and its role in post-transcriptional gene regulation.

MicroRNA, a tiny molecule, acts as a critical regulator of gene activity. This discovery has profound implications for understanding how organisms develop and function.

While all cells in our bodies contain the same genes, they perform different tasks, such as muscle cells and nerve cells. This is possible due to gene regulation, where cells only activate the genes they need. Ambros and Ruvkun’s discovery of microRNA unveiled a new mechanism within this intricate process.

Their research has shed light on how organisms, particularly humans, develop and operate. Their work has also provided insights into various diseases and potential therapeutic strategies.

The 2023 Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman for their contributions to the development of COVID-19 vaccines.

The Nobel Prize, established by the will of Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel, comes with a cash award of 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately ₹8.3 crore). The laureates will receive their awards on December 10th, the anniversary of Nobel’s death.
