Mon Oct 07 10:30:40 UTC 2024: ## American Scientists Win Nobel Prize in Medicine for Discovery of MicroRNA

**Stockholm, Sweden** – Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun, both American scientists, were awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Medicine for their groundbreaking discovery of microRNA. This discovery, deemed “fundamentally important for how organisms develop and function,” sheds light on the intricate regulation of gene activity.

Ambros, currently a professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, conducted his prize-winning research at Harvard University. Ruvkun, a professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School, performed his research at Massachusetts General Hospital.

The Nobel Assembly praised the duo’s work, highlighting its significance in understanding the fundamental principles of how organisms develop and function.

This year’s Nobel Prize in Medicine follows the 2023 award given to Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman for their pivotal role in developing mRNA vaccines against COVID-19.

The prize, worth 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately $1 million), will be presented to the laureates at a ceremony in December, coinciding with the anniversary of Nobel’s death.

This announcement marks the beginning of the annual Nobel Prize season. The remaining awards, for physics, chemistry, literature, peace, and economics, will be announced throughout the week.
