Mon Oct 07 10:20:56 UTC 2024: ## US Scientists Win Nobel Prize in Medicine for MicroRNA Discovery

**Stockholm, Sweden** – US scientists Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun have been awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their groundbreaking work on microRNA. Their research has revolutionized our understanding of gene regulation and its role in the development of diverse human tissues.

The Nobel Assembly at Sweden’s Karolinska Institute cited the pair’s “completely new principle of gene regulation” which is “essential for multicellular organisms, including humans.” Their discovery revealed that microRNAs, tiny snippets of genetic material, play a crucial role in controlling gene expression within cells. This groundbreaking finding helps explain how our DNA, which is identical in every cell, can give rise to the vast array of specialized cells that make up the human body.

“It is now known that the human genome codes for over one thousand microRNAs,” the Assembly stated.

The prize, worth 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately £810,000), is shared equally between Ambros and Ruvkun.
