Birmingham-based entrepreneur Jamelia Donaldson, 33, has turned her childhood passion for styling hair into a global success story with Treasure Tress, Europe’s largest natural hair product discovery box for textured hair.
Donaldson’s journey began with a frustrating experience during a year-long internship in Beijing. As the only black woman in her surroundings, she was forced to use a shoe brush on her curly hair due to a lack of suitable hair care products. This ignited a fire in her to address the lack of representation and cater to the needs of black women with textured hair.
Drawing on her childhood experience of styling classmates’ hair in the playground, Donaldson initially launched Treasure Tress as a side hustle, balancing her corporate career with building the business from the ground up. After months of sleepless nights and relentless dedication, she quit her job to focus full-time on Treasure Tress, which has since expanded globally, serving 46 countries and partnering with over 250 beauty brands.
Treasure Tress provides discovery boxes filled with top hair care products for women and girls with textured hair, including those of mixed race, Asian, and Mediterranean descent. The company has also launched a teen experience, offering personal development workshops for black girls aged 12-19, aiming to build confidence and empower them to embrace their natural hair.
Donaldson’s success has been recognized through winning Channel 4’s “Black in Business” initiative, where she received £100,000 worth of TV advertising and mentorship. Her journey serves as inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs and highlights the importance of representation and inclusivity in the beauty industry.
Applications for the “Black in Business” initiative are currently open and will close on October 28th. For more information, visit [insert link].
