Sat Oct 05 20:31:00 UTC 2024: ## Trump Returns to Site of Assassination Attempt, Rallies Supporters in Pennsylvania

**BUTLER, Penn. –** Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump returned to the site of his July assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, rallying a large crowd in the key battleground state just a month before the election.

Trump, who was grazed in the ear by a bullet during a previous rally on July 13, appeared on stage and resumed his interrupted speech. He called upon Tesla CEO and X owner Elon Musk, a powerful ally, to join him on stage. It was Musk’s first appearance at a Trump campaign event since endorsing the former president after the July attack.

“The true test of someone’s character is how they behave under fire,” Musk told the crowd, urging them to register to vote and “be a pest to everyone you know.” He called the election a “must-win situation” for Trump.

Trump also paid tribute to Corey Comperatore, a firefighter who was killed in the July shooting, along with two others who were wounded. At the exact time the gunfire erupted on July 13, Trump called for a moment of silence, followed by a bell tolling four times, one for each victim, including himself.

Trump alluded to an “enemy from within” more dangerous than a foreign adversary, and declared that the gunman, who he described as a “cold-blooded assassin,” failed to stop his movement.

The crowd, numbering in the tens of thousands, chanted “fight, fight, fight,” a slogan Trump used to rally his supporters after he was shot.

Trump’s vice presidential running mate, Ohio Republican Sen. JD Vance, rejected Democratic arguments that Trump poses a threat to democracy. “Donald Trump took a bullet for democracy. What the hell have you done?” he asked the crowd.

The rally featured a carnival-like atmosphere, with a flyby of Trump’s plane accompanied by the “Top Gun” theme song, parachutists landing near the building where the shooter fired, and trailers lined up around the site to block surrounding views.

Republican officials hope Trump’s return to Butler will energize his supporters in Pennsylvania, a state deemed crucial to winning the election. Trump himself stated he felt obligated to return to Butler, saying “We never finished what we were supposed to do.”

The July shooting sparked widespread criticism of the Secret Service, leading to the resignation of its director. A subsequent probe found communication gaps and a lack of diligence in security measures. The Secret Service has since implemented enhanced security measures for Trump, including bulletproof glass at outdoor rallies.

The event comes after a second attempt on Trump’s life on September 15, where a gunman hid at Trump’s golf course in Florida with plans to assassinate him. The gunman was apprehended by a Secret Service agent before he could carry out the attack.
