The Australian LGBTQIA+ and music community is in mourning following the sudden passing of beloved singer-songwriter Jack Colwell at the age of 34. Known for his raw emotionality and unflinching authenticity, Colwell was a cherished figure in both the industry and the queer community.
Colwell, an independent artist who self-funded much of his work, gained critical acclaim for his 2020 debut album “Swandream,” produced by close friend and collaborator Sarah Blasko. The album garnered praise for its emotional depth and unique sound.
Colwell’s work resonated deeply within Australia’s queer community. His debut single, “Don’t Cry Those Tears,” released in 2015, marked the beginning of his artistic partnership with Blasko, who described him as “one of my favourite people in the whole wide world” with “a musical spirit like no other.”
Just days before his passing, Colwell expressed his excitement about his upcoming second album on social media, promising fans it was “not too far off.”
Queer musician and close friend Brendan Maclean recalled their shared journey, saying they both “came out before coming out was cool.” Describing their early rivalry, Maclean noted that while he focused on image, Colwell was unafraid to “bark, belt and scream” on stage.
Colwell’s fierce stage presence often left audiences captivated, and at times, even “terrified” by his intensity. Fellow musician and friend Gen Fricker, who attended school with Colwell, described him as her “first best friend,” stating she was “devastated and furious” by his loss.
The Australian music industry mourns the loss of this talented artist and the impact he had on the queer community. Jack Colwell’s raw talent and unflinching spirit will be deeply missed.
