Everton manager Sean Dyche has expressed his frustration after his side was denied a penalty in their goalless draw against Newcastle United at Goodison Park. The incident occurred when Dominic Calvert-Lewin was seemingly brought down in the box after a shot that was initially saved by Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope.
Despite widespread calls for a penalty from the home crowd, referee Craig Pawson opted not to consult the VAR monitor. Officials later explained that replays were reviewed but concluded Calvert-Lewin had kicked the back of Dan Burn’s leg, negating any foul.
However, Dyche strongly disputed this, citing it as the latest example of his side being treated unfairly. He highlighted the lack of consistency in penalty decisions, pointing to previous instances where minimal contact was deemed a foul.
“I think it is a bizarre one,” Dyche said after the match. “He (Calvert-Lewin) has clearly tried to strike the ball at goal and their lad, I don’t think he can reach it, he interrupts him striking it at goal. And they don’t even look at it. At least have a look at it.”
Dyche questioned the decision-making process surrounding penalties, highlighting Everton’s lack of success in earning them despite numerous instances of perceived fouls.
The missed penalty opportunity would have given Everton a chance to break the deadlock and secure a vital three points in a game that ultimately ended in a stalemate. The result leaves Everton in a precarious position in the Premier League table, with the club still fighting to avoid relegation.
