Sun Oct 06 08:22:01 UTC 2024: ## NID to Study and Revitalize Arunachal’s Indigenous Handicrafts

**ITANAGAR, Oct 05:** In a bid to preserve and promote the unique handicraft and handloom sector of Arunachal Pradesh, the Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Department (SDED) has partnered with the Ahmedabad-based National Institute of Design (NID) for a comprehensive study. The initiative, funded by the World Bank’s SANKALP program, will focus on understanding the existing skills and challenges within the sector and develop strategies for its revitalization.

A workshop-cum-stakeholders’ meet was held on Friday at the Civil Secretariat, bringing together representatives from various government departments, NGOs, and industry stakeholders. This meeting aimed to map the current landscape of indigenous crafts, identifying the specific skills and needs of women artisans. The NID team, led by Prof. Neelima Hasija and Prof. Shafique Afzal, presented their methodology, highlighting the importance of understanding each district’s unique crafts, the artisans involved, and the challenges they face.

The study will involve field research, analyzing the current ecosystem, and formulating actionable recommendations. The NID team will collaborate with the SDED to develop a comprehensive project titled “Crafts and Vocations by ST/SC Women and Artisans of Arunachal Pradesh,” focusing on skill development and market access for the artisans.

This initiative marks a significant step towards ensuring the sustainability and growth of the state’s rich artistic heritage while empowering the local communities involved in the craft sector.
