**LOS ANGELES** – Rosie O’Donnell, known for her outspoken personality and advocacy work, has been a staunch supporter of Lyle and Erik Menendez for years. The brothers are currently serving life sentences for the 1989 murder of their parents, but new evidence suggests they were victims of sexual abuse by their father, prompting a court hearing and the possibility of release.
O’Donnell, who first received a letter from Lyle Menendez decades ago, believes the brothers are innocent and has been vocal in their support. She was especially moved by her meeting with Lyle in prison, where his brother Erik whispered, “Thank you for loving my brother.”
O’Donnell is ecstatic about the new developments, seeing it as a chance to rectify a societal mistake. “I think that we, as a society, it’s time that we said, ‘We made a mistake, and we didn’t understand what we understand today,’” she shared in a recent interview.
She attributes the renewed attention to the case to the Netflix series “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” and the advocacy of Kim Kardashian, who has been vocal in her support for the brothers’ release. O’Donnell believes the spotlight brought about by these events has helped the District Attorney reconsider the case.
While she recognizes the challenges the brothers will face upon release, O’Donnell remains optimistic and has even promised to take Lyle to Nobu, a restaurant he’s long wanted to visit.
“They’re going to need a lot of therapy to figure out how to be in the world after having been in prison for 35 years,” she acknowledges. “It’s going to be a very, very hard transition.”
Despite the challenges, O’Donnell remains hopeful for a positive outcome, envisioning a future where the brothers can finally find peace and rebuild their lives.
