Prince William’s wedding to Kate Middleton in 2011 wasn’t all smooth sailing. While the couple enjoyed a lavish ceremony watched by millions worldwide, there was one request from the groom that his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, reportedly vetoed.
According to royal expert Roya Nikkhah, William had initially wanted to wear his Household Cavalry military uniform for the wedding. However, the Queen, known for her meticulous attention to detail and fondness for the then-fiancée, insisted on a different attire: William’s Irish Guards uniform.
“The military is everything to William and to Harry,” Nikkhah explained. “The Queen said no, you’re wearing your Irish Guards. That’s the one thing he didn’t get his way on, and he deferred to granny.”
Despite this, the Queen showed her support for the couple in another way. William and Kate reportedly expressed concern about not knowing all the guests invited to the wedding. In response, the Queen reportedly allowed them to “rip up the list” and invite whomever they wished.
The wedding ultimately saw a grand turnout of approximately 1,900 guests, with millions more tuning in worldwide. The Queen’s decision on William’s attire, though a minor detail, ensured the groom looked his best for the momentous occasion.
Thirteen years later, the couple has three children and continues to be a central part of the Royal Family. While William has returned to full-time royal duties, Kate is slowly returning to public life after completing chemotherapy treatment.
