Sat Oct 05 14:46:00 UTC 2024: ## Johnny Carson Statue to be Unveiled in Norfolk, Nebraska

**NORFOLK, NE** – A life-size bronze statue of the late television legend Johnny Carson will be installed and dedicated in downtown Norfolk on Thursday, October 10th. The statue, funded by private donations, was designed and built by Lee Leuning of Back River Artworks in Aberdeen, South Dakota. It will be positioned in Riverpoint Square, allowing visitors to take selfies with the beloved comedian.

The statue is a testament to Carson’s deep connection to his hometown, said Traci Jeffrey, executive director of the Norfolk Area Visitors Bureau. “This is our way as a community to say ‘thank you’ for his generosity,” Jeffrey said. “Johnny always remembered his Nebraska roots.”

The statue depicts Carson in a familiar pose, gesturing with one hand while the other is in his pocket, and sporting a “nice” smile. Leuning said he enjoyed creating the statue, although he noted it’s “always a challenge to do a real human.”

Jeff Sotzing, Carson’s nephew and president of Carson Entertainment Group, believes Johnny would be touched by the honor. “Nebraska, and especially Norfolk, created wonderful memories for him and his sister and brother,” Sotzing said. “To go from a small town that was just learning what television was all about to becoming the host of the ‘Tonight Show’ for over 30 years is an incredible feat to say the least.”

The dedication ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 10th at Riverpoint Square. The statue will stand as a permanent tribute to Carson’s legacy and his love for his hometown.
