Sun Oct 06 17:36:45 UTC 2024: ## Assam News Roundup: NRC Dispute, BJP Membership Surge, School Security Measures

**Guwahati, Assam:** Assam witnessed a flurry of developments this week, with the NRC, BJP membership, and school safety taking center stage.

**NRC Update:** The Assam Public Works (APW) NGO, a key petitioner in the NRC updation process, refuted Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s claim that the BJP government had requested the Supreme Court to allow re-verification of documents for 20% of border residents. APW chief Abhijit Sarma asserted that no such affidavit had been filed by the state or central BJP governments, and they have no intention of pursuing NRC-related work.

**BJP Membership Milestone:** In a contrasting development, the BJP announced that it has now reached 50 lakh members in Assam, making it the fourth state after Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat to achieve this milestone. BJP national general secretary BL Santhosh lauded the party’s success, highlighting the growth from 19 lakh members in 2019. Chief Minister Sarma outlined their goal of securing 40,000 members per Assembly constituency in the future.

**School Safety Measures:** Following a tragic incident at the Padum Pukhuri School in Darrang, where a student lost his life due to an assault, the Kamrup (Metro) district administration has mandated mandatory frisking of school bags. All schools in the district, both state-run and private, have been instructed to check students’ bags and pockets for any prohibited items such as weapons, sharp objects, or toxic substances. The schools have been urged to take the matter seriously and inform parents of any recovered items.
