Sat Oct 05 18:34:52 UTC 2024: ## Southampton Captain Downes Issues Stern Warning After Dismal Loss to Bournemouth

Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse has issued a scathing assessment of his team’s performance following their 3-1 defeat to Bournemouth, calling their first-half display “unacceptable” and “not good enough” at any level.

Downes, who is filling in for the injured Jack Stephens, expressed his disappointment with the team’s lack of fight, commitment, and belief, stating that they “let the staff down and the fans that travelled.” He highlighted their inability to recover after conceding three goals in the first half, echoing the team’s struggles against Manchester United.

“We started well, started sharp,” he admitted, but went on to say that a quick free-kick caught them off guard and led to their collapse. He urged his teammates to take a hard look in the mirror, work harder, and fight for every point in their quest to climb out of the relegation zone.

“You can talk about tactics all you want but you have to fight and earn the right to play,” Downes emphasized. “We didn’t do that, and the fans deserve to see that fight every week. It’s a given at this level, there is no other option.”

The Saints now face a daunting task this weekend against Arsenal, a game Downes will again captain. The team will need to show a marked improvement in their performance and attitude if they hope to avoid a repeat of their recent struggles.
