Sun Oct 06 18:12:04 UTC 2024: ## Air Show Tragedy: 3 Dead, 230 Hospitalized Amidst Chaos in Chennai

Chennai witnessed a tragic turn of events on Sunday as the Indian Air Force’s 92nd anniversary air show turned deadly, with three attendees losing their lives due to suffocation and 230 others hospitalized. The event, which drew massive crowds eager to witness the aerial spectacle, descended into chaos after the show, with traffic jams and a lack of basic amenities contributing to the tragedy.

Thousands of people thronged the Marina Beach, captivated by the display of air power by the Indian Air Force, including the Rafale fighter jet. However, the celebrations turned sour as the crowd faced immense difficulty navigating back home. Severe traffic congestion, coupled with sweltering heat, resulted in a chaotic situation.

The Chennai Metro Rail System (CMRTS) faced immense pressure, with hundreds of people crowding the Lighthouse and Velachery stations. Many were unable to board trains, while others found themselves stuck in the throngs.

A similar situation arose at the bus stop near Anna Square, where massive crowds gathered. The situation was exacerbated by the breakdown of three ambulances trapped in the traffic jams. A senior police official reported near-stampede conditions at Marina Beach, with many collapsing due to heat exhaustion.

The tragic incident has led to widespread criticism of the event’s organizers for a lack of adequate planning and crowd management.

AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami criticized the lack of proper administrative and traffic management, highlighting the inadequate police force and insufficient arrangements for basic amenities like drinking water.

The air show, intended to celebrate the Indian Air Force, has instead been marred by a tragic loss of life and highlighted the urgent need for improved planning and crowd control at major events.
