**New Delhi** – The Indian Air Force (IAF) has set its sights on achieving complete self-reliance in its fleet by 2047, driven by a desire to secure its borders and reduce dependence on foreign defense systems. This ambitious goal, announced by Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, comes amidst heightened tensions with China along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

“We are upgrading our infrastructure to match China’s rapid development along the LAC,” Singh said, highlighting the need for stronger indigenous defense capabilities. He stressed that homegrown weapons systems are crucial for future security, as India faces complex geopolitical challenges.

The IAF is already moving towards self-reliance, with plans to induct nearly 300 Tejas Mark-1A and Mark-2 fighters over the next 15 years. However, delays in the production of the LCA Tejas, partly due to challenges faced by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), remain a concern.

“We need to look at private players coming in to help meet the production challenges,” Singh said, acknowledging the need for collaboration to expedite production and ensure timely delivery.

The IAF’s roadmap includes replacing its aging fleet of transport aircraft with a common, domestically produced model. The force is also collaborating with ISRO and other agencies to enhance its space-based assets, recognizing the importance of integrating cutting-edge technologies for future conflicts.

“We have to make decisions quickly, and the aircraft should be made in India,” Singh emphasized, urging policymakers and industry leaders to prioritize innovation and expedite efforts towards achieving the 2047 goal.

The IAF’s ambition to build a self-sufficient fleet, produced entirely within India, reflects the nation’s broader vision of self-reliance in critical sectors. This initiative signifies a significant shift in India’s defense strategy, aiming to ensure operational readiness and navigate a complex security environment with greater confidence.
