Sat Oct 05 03:22:01 UTC 2024: ## Biden Urges Restraint, Trump Calls for Strikes: US Leaders Offer Contrasting Views on Iran

**WASHINGTON** – President Joe Biden on Friday cautioned Israel against striking Iran’s oil facilities, emphasizing his efforts to rally international support to prevent a full-blown Middle Eastern war. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump, campaigning for a return to the White House, advocated for a more aggressive approach, suggesting Israel should target Iran’s nuclear sites.

During a surprise appearance in the White House briefing room, Biden reminded Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of US support for Israel, urging him to consider alternative responses to recent Iranian missile attacks.

“If I were in their shoes, I’d be thinking about other alternatives than striking oil fields,” Biden stated, referencing his earlier comments about Washington’s discussions with Israel regarding potential strikes.

Trump, campaigning in North Carolina, presented a starkly different viewpoint, referencing a question posed to Biden about targeting Iran’s nuclear program.

“They asked him, ‘What do you think about Iran, would you hit Iran?’ And he goes, ‘As long as they don’t hit the nuclear stuff.’ That’s the thing you want to hit, right?” Trump said, criticizing Biden’s response as “wrong.”

“When they asked him that question, the answer should have been, hit the nuclear first, and worry about the rest later,” Trump added.

Biden’s appearance came amidst escalating tensions in the Middle East, following Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon aimed at dismantling Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed militia, in response to a barrage of rockets launched at Israel. The President expressed his commitment to preventing a full-scale conflict, emphasizing the need for international cooperation.

He acknowledged the volatile nature of the situation, highlighting the “irrational” behavior of Iranian proxies like Hezbollah and the Houthis in Yemen. However, Biden also addressed Netanyahu directly, noting his efforts to support Israel and suggesting Netanyahu “should remember that” when making decisions.

The contrasting statements from the two leaders underscore the divergent approaches to the Iranian conflict. While Biden prioritizes diplomacy and international cooperation, Trump advocates for a more forceful response. With the November 5th election approaching, the escalating tensions in the Middle East have become a focal point of political debate.
