**Dubai, UAE:** India’s Women’s T20 World Cup campaign got off to a disastrous start with a 58-run loss to New Zealand in their opening match on Tuesday. The Blackcaps posted a formidable 160/4 thanks to a brilliant unbeaten 57 from skipper Sophie Devine. In response, India were bundled out for a paltry 102, with Rosemary Mair claiming four wickets.
The match was marred by a controversial run out incident involving Amelia Kerr. The New Zealand batter was declared not out despite appearing to be run out on the last ball of the 14th over.
The incident unfolded when Kerr, attempting a second run after initially going for a single, was run out before completing the double. However, by then the umpire had already called the over dead, deeming Kerr not out despite the clear run out.
This controversial decision sparked immediate criticism, with Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur engaging in a heated discussion with the umpires. Veteran Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin also took to X, questioning the umpiring decision, before later deleting his post.
Harmanpreet admitted that India failed to perform at their best in the opening game, acknowledging that they need to improve in several areas going forward.
“We didn’t play our best cricket today,” Harmanpreet said after the match. “Going forward we have to think what areas we have to improve. Every game now is important and we have to play our best cricket. We created chances, it’s not like that we didn’t create. They played better cricket than us, no doubt about that.”
This defeat will undoubtedly serve as a wake-up call for the Indian team, who will now need to regroup and find a way to bounce back in their remaining group stage matches.
