**ORILLIA, ONTARIO –** Lakehead University’s Orillia campus will host the 2024 NASA International Space Apps Challenge on October 5th and 6th, bringing together individuals of all ages and backgrounds to tackle some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

This year’s theme focuses on the sun’s influence on Earth and the solar system, with 20 challenges developed by NASA subject matter experts. Participants will work in teams over 48 hours to develop solutions using NASA’s open data, ranging from climate issues to exoplanets.

“We’re thrilled to bring this event to Simcoe County and Muskoka,” said Rebecca Heffernan, Director of Economic Development & Research Support and co-lead of the event. “This hackathon-style competition provides a unique platform for diverse problem solvers to come together and we’re excited to see what creative solutions emerge from Orillia.”

The event welcomes participation from individuals of all skill levels, including coders, data analysts, storytellers, artists, social workers, environmental scientists, and more.

“Participants will develop their communication, innovation, and problem-solving skills,” explained Jessica Lovett, Director of Career Services and Co-op and co-lead of the event. “It’s fantastic to see industry and economic development teams involved, providing valuable networking opportunities for students and preparing them for future careers.”

Past Space Apps projects have yielded creative solutions, ranging from comic books to mobile apps. Participants who submit projects before midnight on October 6th will receive a certificate from NASA, with additional prizes awarded for local and global winners.

The City of Orillia is proud to sponsor the event, recognizing its alignment with the city’s commitment to fostering innovation and economic growth.

“This event highlights the importance of collaboration and creative solutions,” said Mayor Don McIsaac. “We are proud to support this initiative, empowering individuals to tackle global challenges while nurturing local talent and innovation.”
