Fri Oct 04 18:34:54 UTC 2024: ## Team India Stumbles in T20 World Cup Opener, Loses to New Zealand by 58 Runs
**Dubai:** India’s hopes of a strong start in the Women’s T20 World Cup were dashed as they suffered a crushing defeat against New Zealand in their opening match. Despite restricting New Zealand to 160 runs, India faltered miserably in their chase, getting bowled out for a paltry 102 runs, losing the match by a massive 58 runs.
Captain Harmanpreet Kaur top-scored for India with 15 runs, but no other batter managed to reach the 15-run mark. New Zealand bowlers Rosemary Mair and Leigh Tahuhu wreaked havoc, claiming 4 and 3 wickets respectively, effectively dismantling the Indian batting lineup. Eden Carson and Amelia Kerr also chipped in with 2 and 1 wickets each.
India started their chase aggressively, with Smriti Mandhana hitting a boundary off the very first ball. However, the early momentum quickly dissipated as Shafali Verma (2) and Mandhana (12) were dismissed within the first five overs. Harmanpreet Kaur followed suit in the sixth over, leaving India reeling at 40/3.
The wickets kept tumbling, with Jemimah Rodrigues (13), Richa Ghosh (12), Arundhati Reddy (1), and Deepti Sharma (13) falling in quick succession. By the 15th over, India were struggling at 88/7, with the required run-rate escalating with each passing over. The remaining batters could only manage to reduce the margin of defeat, with India eventually getting bowled out in the 19th over.
Earlier, New Zealand won the toss and opted to bat first. Sophie Devine led the charge with a blistering 57 runs off 36 balls, while openers Suzie Bates (27) and Georgia Plimmer (34) also contributed significantly. However, Arundhati Reddy curbed their aggression, dismissing Bates in the 8th over.
India’s bowlers, led by Renuka Thakur (2 wickets), Arundhati Reddy, and Asha Shobana (1 wicket each), put up a decent fight but ultimately failed to restrict New Zealand to a low score.
This disappointing start will require Team India to regroup quickly and strategize effectively if they are to make a strong comeback in the tournament.
