**Goma, Congo -** A boat carrying hundreds of passengers capsized in Lake Kivu in eastern Congo on Thursday, killing at least 78 people, according to a local official. Governor Jean-Jacques Mupusi of South Kivu province stated that the boat, carrying 278 passengers, capsized near the port of Kituku.
Eyewitnesses reported that the boat was overcrowded. It was en route from Minowa in South Kivu to Goma in North Kivu when the accident occurred. The death toll is expected to rise.
This is the latest in a series of deadly boat accidents in Congo. In June, a boat sank near the capital Kinshasa, killing 80 passengers. In January, another boat capsized in Lake Mai-Ndombe, killing 22 people.
