**Bengaluru, India** – The Karnataka Food Safety and Quality Department has issued a public warning after identifying cancer-causing chemicals in 12 popular bakery cake products. The alarming findings, which revealed the presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and acrylamide, have sparked concerns about food safety and the potential health risks associated with these beloved treats.
Out of 235 cake samples tested, 12 were found to contain dangerous levels of artificial food coloring agents, including Allura red, Sunset Yellow FCF, Ponceau 4R, Tartrazine, and Carmoisine. These chemicals, commonly used in vibrant cakes like black forest and red velvet, are suspected to contribute to increased cancer risks, neurological damage, reproductive problems, birth defects, and genetic mutations.
The Department emphasized that the excessive use of these artificial colors poses significant health risks, urging consumers to be aware of the potential consequences. They have also called for increased scrutiny of bakery practices and stricter regulations regarding the use of artificial coloring agents in food products.
While 223 samples were found to be safe, the discovery of harmful chemicals in 12 popular cake products highlights the need for enhanced food safety measures. The Karnataka government has pledged to take necessary steps to ensure the quality and safety of bakery products, emphasizing the importance of consumer awareness and responsible food choices.
