Sat Oct 05 09:51:09 UTC 2024: ## Overloaded Boat Capsizes in Lake Kivu, Congo, Killing Dozens

**Bukavu, DR Congo:** A horrific boat accident occurred in Lake Kivu, Eastern Congo, yesterday, resulting in the deaths of at least 50 people. The overloaded vessel, carrying an estimated 100 passengers, capsized while attempting to dock near Kituku harbor.

The boat was traveling from Minova in South Kivu province to Goma in North Kivu province when it met its tragic end. The incident is being attributed to the boat being severely overcrowded. Witnesses report that most of the passengers could not swim, and the lack of life jackets further exacerbated the tragedy.

Ten survivors were transported to Kishaero Hospital for treatment.

“The boat had a capacity of about 30 passengers, but was carrying nearly 100,” confirmed Jean-Jacques Purusi, the Governor of South Kivu Province, in a statement to local radio. “We will take stern action against the boat owners responsible for this tragedy.”

The incident sparked widespread outrage and grief across the region. Social media is ablaze with images and videos of the accident, raising concerns about safety regulations and lax enforcement in the area.

A search and rescue mission is currently underway. Authorities are working to confirm the exact number of casualties and identify the victims.
