**Munich, Germany** – Despite its status as BMW’s first dedicated M model since the legendary M1, the highly anticipated XM SUV is struggling to find its place in the market. With a hefty price tag and a polarizing design, the XM is proving to be a slow seller, particularly in the US, its projected largest market.
While global sales saw a 53.3% increase in the first half of 2024, only 3,807 units were sold worldwide, making it one of BMW’s slowest-selling models. The US market, where the XM was fully available only in 2024, saw sales drop by 14.2% to 1,385 units through September.
Experts attribute the XM’s lackluster performance to several factors, including its high price, unique design, and stiff competition within BMW’s own lineup. The base model, priced at $159,925, is significantly more expensive than the popular X5 M Competition, which offers similar performance at a $125,975 price point.
Furthermore, the XM’s unusual design, a departure from BMW’s more traditional aesthetic, may have also deterred some buyers. While BMW aimed for a high-end SUV experience similar to Lamborghini Urus and Mercedes G-Class, it seems that customers are opting for more conventional offerings.
To boost sales, BMW is streamlining the XM lineup in the US, dropping the base model and leaving only the more powerful Label variant. However, this move will only further increase the XM’s already expensive price point, starting at $185,925.
The XM’s future remains uncertain. While BMW is still considering a second generation, the model’s current performance and looming production end date in late 2027 suggest that the XM may not be a long-term player in BMW’s lineup.
Whether the XM will be able to regain its footing remains to be seen. However, its struggles highlight the challenges of balancing performance, design, and price in a crowded market. With its hefty price tag and distinctive design, the XM seems to have missed its mark, leaving many wondering if BMW should have taken a different direction with its first dedicated M model since the iconic M1.
