**Dubai, UAE:** South Africa Women kicked off their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup campaign with a resounding 10-wicket victory over the defending champions, West Indies, in a dominant display at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Friday.
The Proteas, led by Laura Wolvaardt, bowled out the West Indies for a paltry 118 runs, with left-arm spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba taking a career-best 4 for 29. Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits then chased down the target with ease, remaining unbeaten on 55 and 56 respectively, to secure a comfortable win.
Mlaba, who was named Player of the Match, highlighted the team’s strong performance: “It was a very special moment for me. It’s a dream to play for South Africa. My plan was simple, to target the stumps.”
Wolvaardt, while acknowledging the challenging conditions, attributed the victory to a “complete performance” from her team.
The West Indies, led by Hayley Matthews, struggled to gain any momentum throughout the innings, losing wickets regularly. Stafanie Taylor, the team’s stalwart, fought a lone battle, remaining unbeaten on 44, but couldn’t prevent a collapse.
Despite the defeat, Matthews was optimistic about the tournament, stating: “This is a long tournament, and we hope to bounce back stronger.”
South Africa now face England in Sharjah on Monday, while West Indies will look to regroup against tournament debutants Scotland on Sunday.
