Fri Oct 04 12:51:31 UTC 2024: ## Overcrowded Boat Capsizes on Lake Kivu, Killing at Least 78 in Congo
**GOMA, Congo** (AP) – A tragic boat accident on Lake Kivu in eastern Congo has claimed the lives of at least 78 people, with many still missing. The overcrowded vessel capsized on Thursday afternoon while attempting to dock at the port of Kituku, just meters from shore.
The boat, carrying an estimated 278 passengers, had departed from Minova in South Kivu province en route to Goma in North Kivu province. Witnesses report seeing the boat struggling to maintain balance before sinking, with many passengers thrown into the water.
Jean-Jacques Purusi, the governor of South Kivu province, confirmed the provisional death toll, emphasizing that it is likely to rise as rescue operations continue. The governor attributed the accident to a combination of factors, including overcrowding, lack of safety equipment, and negligence.
“We will establish responsibilities and put in place a sanctions regime,” Purusi stated, “but also recommendations to improve navigation on the lake.” He highlighted the absence of life jackets on board as a significant contributing factor to the tragedy.
This latest incident adds to a string of deadly boat accidents in Congo, often linked to overcrowding and disregard for maritime regulations. In June, an overloaded boat sank near Kinshasa, resulting in the death of 80 passengers.
The accident has sparked outrage among residents and victims’ families, who accuse authorities of negligence in light of the growing insecurity in the region. The conflict between Congolese armed forces and M23 rebels has made the road between Goma and Minova impassable, forcing many traders to rely on Lake Kivu transport.
“This shipwreck was predictable,” said Elia Asumani, a shipping agent who works on the route.
The survivors, approximately ten in number, are receiving treatment at Kyeshero Hospital. They recount a harrowing experience, describing the boat filling with water and the frantic struggle to stay afloat.
This tragedy underscores the urgent need for improved safety measures on Lake Kivu, particularly given the increased reliance on maritime transport in the region.
