Thu Oct 03 17:39:26 UTC 2024: ## Nobel Prize Predictions: Chemists Weigh In on Potential Winners

With autumn officially here, the scientific community is abuzz with anticipation for the upcoming Nobel Prize announcements. In the lead-up to the October 9th reveal, C&EN has partnered with ACS Webinars for their annual predictions webinar.

The webinar, hosted by C&EN Executive Editor Laura Howes, featured a panel of experts: Chibueze Amanchukwu (University of Chicago), Steven Suib (University of Connecticut), Stacey Paiva (Nature Chemistry), and Ching Jin (University of Warwick).

Jin, a specialist in computational methodologies, presented his analysis of the impact prizes have on scientific networks, sparking discussion among the panelists and audience. The webinar also included an audience poll, which saw Omar M. Yaghi, a pioneer in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), emerge as the top contender.

Other favorites for the Chemistry Nobel Prize this year include researchers working in next-generation DNA sequencing, molecular dynamics, clean energy, and 3D protein structure prediction. ChemistryViews, the science news magazine of Chemistry Europe, highlighted biochemist Chi-Huey Wong as a leading contender, followed by Yaghi and Shankar Balasubramanian, the latter of whom was also a panelist choice.

The webinar highlighted a diverse range of potential winners, including previous contenders like Krzysztof Matyjaszewski, David Baker, and John M. Jumper. Clarivate, the provider of Web of Science, added Kazunari Domen, Roberto Car, and Michele Parrinello to the list of potential laureates.

Outside of the webinar, online commentary pointed towards John P. Perdew, Axel Becke, Emily Que, Eckard Münck, and Edward I. Solomon as possible winners. Publications like the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry and Cell Chemical Biology have also advocated for property-based drug design and immunotherapy, respectively.

C&EN will be reporting on the official Nobel Prize announcements on October 9th, providing a final answer to the annual prediction game. In the meantime, the scientific community will continue to speculate and celebrate the groundbreaking research that has paved the way for these potential laureates.
