The recent three-phase elections in Jammu and Kashmir have been hailed as a significant accomplishment, demonstrating a gradual shift towards normalcy in the region. With a record low number of incidents compared to the 2014 polls, the elections saw enthusiastic participation from the people, particularly in the Kashmir Valley.
Voter turnout was notably high across all three phases, with the final phase in the northern districts of Bandipore, Baramulla, and Kupwara seeing figures of 67.68%, 61.03%, and 66.79% respectively. The Jammu region also witnessed high voter turnout, exemplified by the astounding 97.99% turnout at the Phelgowri polling station in Kishtwar.
The elections have also brought to light a changing political landscape in the Valley. Traditional parties like the National Conference and People’s Democratic Party are facing new challenges from former underground elements. The Jamaat-e-Islami, previously known for its election boycotts, has chosen to support independent candidates. Additionally, Sheikh Abdul Rashid’s Awami Ittehad Party (AIP), which formed an alliance with the Jamaat-e-Islami, is contesting 35 seats in the Valley. This shift has led to speculation that the BJP may be using these independent candidates to undermine the traditional parties.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has viewed the participation of former separatist groups in the electoral process as a positive development. He believes that the participation of these groups, who once pledged allegiance to Pakistan, in Indian democratic processes signifies a step towards normalcy.
Experts argue that the successful completion of the elections in Kashmir signifies a victory for Indian democracy and the potential for continued progress towards peace and stability in the region. The shift in the political landscape and the increased participation of previously marginalized groups represent a hopeful sign for the future of Jammu and Kashmir.
