**PLAINS, GA** – Former President Jimmy Carter celebrated his 100th birthday on Tuesday, making him the first American president to reach the milestone and marking the latest chapter in a life dedicated to service. Surrounded by family and friends in his hometown of Plains, Carter continues to defy expectations, having spent the last 19 months in home hospice care.

“Not everybody gets 100 years on this earth,” said his grandson, Jason Carter, “and when somebody does, and when they use that time to do so much good for so many people, it’s worth celebrating.”

Carter’s journey from Depression-era farmer’s son to Nobel Peace Prize-winning humanitarian has been marked by both personal and political achievements. After serving as the 39th president from 1977 to 1981, he dedicated himself to The Carter Center, co-founded with his wife Rosalynn, focusing on promoting peace, fighting disease, and advancing democracy around the globe.

In recognition of his legacy, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp declared Tuesday “Jimmy Carter Day.” The day also saw a musical gala in Atlanta, raising over $1.2 million for The Carter Center, and a dedication by Habitat for Humanity volunteers to build 30 houses in his honor.

President Joe Biden, a long-time friend of Carter, praised his “unwavering belief in the power of human goodness” and shared a tribute video acknowledging the former president’s lasting impact.

While Carter’s birthday was a celebration of his life and achievements, the political climate continued to cast a shadow. Donald Trump, in a typical move, used the occasion to criticize Biden and offer backhanded praise for Carter, while failing to acknowledge his accomplishments.
