**Kyiv, Ukraine** – The strategic coal mining town of Vuhledar in eastern Ukraine is now under Russian control, according to reports. While neither Ukraine nor Russia has officially confirmed the capture, images circulating on social media show the Russian flag flying atop buildings in the town.

This development significantly bolsters Russia’s control over the Donbas region, with 80% of the industrial-rich Donetsk and Luhansk provinces now under their control.

The capture of Vuhledar, a town built by the Soviet Union in the 1960s, is a major gain for Russian forces. The town boasts two large coal mines with significant reserves, making it a valuable asset.

Meanwhile, Ukraine reports that Russia launched a drone attack on the southern Odesa region overnight, using 32 drones. The Ukrainian military successfully shot down 11 of these drones.

Russia’s objective in the Ukrainian invasion has been widely understood as gaining control of the Donbas region. This latest capture is a major step towards achieving that goal.
