**Bangkok, Thailand** – A tragic bus crash and subsequent fire claimed the lives of 20 children and three teachers on Tuesday, sending shockwaves through the nation. The bus, carrying schoolchildren on a return trip from a school trip in northern Thailand, caught fire under an overpass near Bangkok.
Witnesses reported a front tire blowout causing the bus to crash into a concrete barrier, leading to the intense blaze. Many passengers were unable to escape the rapidly engulfing flames. Nineteen children and three teachers survived the horrific incident, with sixteen currently receiving medical treatment for injuries.
The driver, who was initially seen attempting to extinguish the flames, fled the scene but later surrendered to police approximately 100km north of Bangkok. Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, but Transport Minister Suriyahe Juangroongruangkit expressed serious concerns about the bus being powered by compressed natural gas, labeling it “extremely risky.” He suggested banning the use of this fuel for passenger vehicles.
The charred remains of the victims were difficult to identify due to the severity of the fire, with officials stating that the smaller bodies of children were found at the rear of the bus, indicating their desperate attempt to escape the inferno. The ages of the children on board remain unclear, but the school caters for pupils between three and 15 years old.
The devastating incident once again highlights Thailand’s grim road safety record, which sees roughly 20,000 fatalities annually due to unsafe vehicles and poor driving practices. Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has announced a full investigation into the crash, utilizing evidence from tire marks, burn patterns, and CCTV footage.
This tragedy has prompted widespread calls for improved road safety measures and stricter regulations on vehicle safety and fuel usage in Thailand.
