**Los Angeles, CA -** YouTuber and lost media expert Ray Mona has unearthed a long-lost pilot episode for a proposed live-action adaptation of the popular anime series, “Saint Seiya.” The episode, titled “StarStorm,” was created in the 1990s by Renaissance Atlantic, the producers behind the iconic “Power Rangers” series. Mona’s discovery follows the successful unveiling of the pilot episode for a proposed American animated adaptation of “Saint Seiya,” titled “Guardians of the Cosmos,” last year.
The “StarStorm” pilot, which remained unseen for decades, features a unique blend of live-action and animation, similar to the approach taken with “Saban Moon,” a scrapped live-action adaptation of “Sailor Moon” that was also produced by Renaissance Atlantic. Mona theorizes that the “StarStorm” pilot might have incorporated elements from “Guardians of the Cosmos,” hinting at a possible hybrid show concept.
The “StarStorm” episode was found in the Library of Congress alongside documents related to the “Saban Moon” project. Mona had received permission from former Bandai America president Frank Ward to access these materials, initially focusing her search on finding the full “StarStorm” pilot. After discovering the “Guardians of the Cosmos” pilot, Mona shifted her attention to exploring the context and potential connections between the two projects.
Mona’s latest discovery has thrilled anime fans, offering a glimpse into the early stages of bringing “Saint Seiya” to the Western audience. It also sheds light on the creative development and potential of the series in the 1990s, a period that saw numerous attempts to adapt Japanese animation for American audiences.
