Tue Oct 01 01:58:35 UTC 2024: ## Climate Activist Sonam Wangchuk Detained at Delhi Border, Rahul Gandhi Blames Modi

**New Delhi:** Renowned climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and hundreds of his supporters were detained at the Singhu border on Monday night, sparking outrage and accusations of political interference. The group, on a peaceful march from Leh to Delhi advocating for Ladakh’s rights, was stopped by Delhi Police under Section 163 of the CrPC.

Rahul Gandhi, leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, condemned the detention, calling it “unacceptable” and laying blame directly at the feet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Gandhi took to social media, questioning the rationale behind detaining elderly citizens and veterans who were peacefully advocating for Ladakh’s future. He compared the situation to the farmers’ protests, stating, “This ‘Chakravyuh’ will be broken, and so will your arrogance. You will have to listen to Ladakh’s voice.”

Wangchuk himself shared the news of his detention on social media, expressing shock and dismay at the situation. He reported that he and 150 other marchers were detained by a large police force, despite being on a peaceful march towards Mahatma Gandhi’s Samadhi.

The group’s key demands include the inclusion of Ladakh in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, which would grant local legislative powers to protect their land and cultural identity. They also advocate for statehood and stronger ecological protections for the region.

The march began in Leh on September 1, with Wangchuk emphasizing the importance of reminding the government of its promises to the people of Ladakh. The detention has sparked widespread concerns about the suppression of peaceful dissent and the government’s response to legitimate demands from the region.
