Tue Oct 01 03:37:13 UTC 2024: ## Pawar Condemns Efforts to Erase Koregaon Bhima History, Calls Modi a Threat to Equality

**Pune, October 1, 2024** – NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar has strongly condemned attempts to erase the history of Koregaon Bhima, a site in Maharashtra’s Pune district where a significant battle took place in 1818. He linked the violence that erupted a day after the Elgar Parishad conclave on December 31, 2017, to efforts by “communal elements” to rewrite history.

Speaking at a function on Monday, Pawar emphasized the sacrifices made by those who fought in the Koregaon Bhima battle, where a British army comprising Dalits defeated the Peshwas. He claimed that certain individuals tried to force him to say specific things during his cross-examination by the Koregaon Bhima Inquiry Commission, set up to investigate the 2017 violence.

“The history of Koregaon Bhima is a history of people who sacrificed their lives. But some communal elements are trying to wipe out that history,” Pawar asserted. He also praised advocate Rahul Makhare, who joined the NCP (SP) on Monday and has been representing some witnesses before the commission.

Pawar further criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, claiming that his ideology poses a threat to societal equality and the Constitution of India. He accused the BJP of aiming to change the Constitution, citing statements from BJP leaders about their plans if they secured 400 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He attributed India’s stability to the Constitution drafted by B.R. Ambedkar, highlighting the importance of preserving its principles.
