**Las Vegas, Nevada (AFP) -** Pete Rose, the Major League Baseball all-time hit king who was banned from the sport for betting on games, passed away on Monday at the age of 83.
Known as “Charlie Hustle” for his relentless hustle and determination, Rose held numerous MLB records, including the most hits (4,256), at-bats (15,890), games played (3,562) and singles (3,215). His most celebrated achievement was breaking Ty Cobb’s all-time hit record in 1985.
Rose was a 17-time All-Star, winning three World Series titles with the Cincinnati Reds and Philadelphia Phillies. He was also a three-time batting champion and a National League MVP.
Despite his illustrious career, Rose’s legacy remains tarnished by the scandal that ended his playing and managerial career. In 1989, he was banned from baseball for life after an investigation revealed he had bet on games, including those involving the Reds while he was manager.
Rose fought for reinstatement multiple times but was ultimately unsuccessful. In 2004, he admitted to betting on Reds games, but maintained he had only bet on them to win. In 2010, he apologized to his former teammates for his actions, acknowledging that he had “disrespected baseball”.
Although Rose’s ban prevented him from being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, his number 14 was retired by the Cincinnati Reds in 2016.
Rose’s passing marks the end of an era for baseball, leaving a lasting impact on the sport that will be remembered for both his incredible accomplishments on the field and the controversies that shadowed his career.
