Tue Oct 01 08:14:50 UTC 2024: ## Congress Leader Jagdish Tytler Challenges Charges in 1984 Anti-Sikh Riot Case

**New Delhi, October 1, 2024:** Congress leader Jagdish Tytler has challenged the framing of charges against him in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, seeking to quash the August 30 order of the trial court. The Delhi High Court will hear the plea on November 29.

Tytler maintains his innocence, claiming he was not present at the scene of the incident and that the charges against him are a result of a “witch-hunt.” He also argues that the trial court’s order framing charges was “perverse, illegal, and lacked application of mind.”

The CBI and the victims, however, countered Tytler’s alibi claim, arguing that it had already been rejected by the high court. They also maintain that credible evidence supports the allegations against him.

The trial court framed charges against Tytler on September 13, after he pleaded not guilty to the offenses. He faces charges of murder, unlawful assembly, rioting, promoting enmity between different groups, house trespass, and theft.

The CBI alleges that Tytler instigated and provoked a mob at Pul Bangash Gurdwara Azad Market on November 1, 1984, resulting in the burning of the gurdwara and the deaths of three Sikhs. Witnesses reportedly saw Tytler emerge from a white Ambassador car and incite the mob by shouting, “Kill the Sikhs, they have killed our mother.”

Tytler, now 80 years old and suffering from various health issues, has sought quashing of the charges, claiming he is a victim of harassment and is being forced to face trial for an alleged offense committed over four decades ago.
