Mon Sep 30 21:52:27 UTC 2024: ## Gilgit-Baltistan Residents Protest Substandard Flour, Wheat Quota Cuts

**Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir:** Residents of Gilgit-Baltistan have taken to the streets to protest against a significant reduction in wheat quotas and the distribution of substandard flour. Members of the Tahafuz Wheat Movement, along with community representatives, gathered outside the Gilgit Press Club, demanding immediate action from the government.

Protesters voiced concerns over the quality of wheat being distributed, which they claim has led to an increase in health issues. One protester asserted, “People here are being given low-quality wheat, resulting in overflowing hospitals. We demand the government halt the distribution of substandard flour and provide better quality wheat, even at the level provided to prisoners in Pakistani jails.”

The government’s sourcing practices have also come under fire. Protesters allege that the government is purchasing low-quality wheat from Ukraine at inflated prices, prioritizing Ukrainian wheat over local produce. “We want local wheat. They don’t want to provide this wheat to Gilgit Baltistan,” stated another protester.

The wheat crisis in Gilgit-Baltistan, exacerbated by shortages and surging prices, has become a major concern for residents. The region’s staple food has become increasingly inaccessible, with many struggling to afford basic necessities. The ineffective government policies and delayed distribution of subsidized wheat are further aggravating the situation.

The protests highlight deeper economic grievances and underscore the pressing need for sustainable agricultural practices and robust food supply systems to ensure the well-being of the community in Gilgit-Baltistan. The government is urged to address these concerns and provide immediate solutions to the wheat crisis.
