Vienna, Austria – The Freedom Party, a far-right political group, is projected to win Austria’s national parliamentary election, marking the first time a far-right party has achieved such victory in post-World War II Austria. The party’s success is attributed to voter anxieties over immigration, inflation, the war in Ukraine, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to projections by ORF public television, the Freedom Party garnered approximately 28.9% of the vote, surpassing the governing Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP) which received 26.3%. The center-left Social Democrats (SPÖ) came in third with 21%. This result indicates a loss of majority for the outgoing coalition government formed by the ÖVP and the Green Party.
Herbert Kickl, the Freedom Party leader, has expressed his desire to become Austria’s new Chancellor. However, forming a government requires a coalition partner, and rival parties have publicly stated their unwillingness to work with Kickl.
The Freedom Party’s platform, dubbed “Fortress Austria,” calls for stricter immigration policies, including “remigration of uninvited foreigners” and a “homogeneous” nation through tighter border controls. The party also advocates for an end to sanctions against Russia and opposes Western military aid to Ukraine.
Despite their victory, the Freedom Party’s path to power remains uncertain. The ÖVP, led by Chancellor Karl Nehammer, has categorically ruled out a coalition with Kickl, citing concerns over his potential threat to national security. However, the ÖVP remains the only party capable of forming a government with the Freedom Party.
Other possible coalition scenarios include an alliance between the ÖVP and the SPÖ, potentially with the support of the liberal Neos party.
The election results have sparked protests in Vienna, with demonstrators expressing their disapproval of the Freedom Party’s ideologies. The future of Austrian politics now hinges on the negotiation process between the various parties as they attempt to form a stable government.
