Major League Cricket (MLC), America’s burgeoning professional T20 league, is seeing continued growth despite still being in an investment phase. Following a successful launch that exceeded financial expectations, the league has attracted high-profile international players, including Australian superstar Pat Cummins, solidifying its position in the world’s biggest sports market.
While MLC has drawn in significant investment – over $100 million from influential Indian businessmen based in Silicon Valley – turning a profit remains a future goal. “We are still in an investment mode,” admits Anand Rajaraman, co-owner of the San Francisco Unicorns. “It’ll probably take us a few years to get there, but things seem to be progressing in the right direction.”
One major hurdle to profitability is the lack of permanent home grounds for most franchises. While the Texas Super Kings boast a dedicated stadium in Dallas, other teams like San Francisco, Washington DC, Los Angeles, Seattle, and MI New York are still searching for suitable venues. This is especially urgent given the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where cricket competitions are planned.
Rajaraman emphasizes that having a dedicated stadium will unlock other revenue streams and contribute to the league’s overall financial sustainability. “It’s (turning a profit) probably going to be tied to when we can play games locally…have that permanent stadium,” he says.
The league is also looking to develop homegrown talent through initiatives like the Unicorns’ partnership with Cricket Victoria in Australia. Rajaraman emphasizes their commitment to utilizing data and analytics to push the boundaries of the game.
Despite the challenges, MLC remains optimistic about its future, hoping to tap into a wider fanbase and establish itself as a key player in the global cricket landscape.
