**Milwaukee, WI/Detroit, MI/Raleigh, NC** – Recent polls suggest that former President Donald Trump is making significant inroads against Vice President Kamala Harris in key swing states, narrowing the gap and potentially jeopardizing her lead in the 2024 presidential race.
The New York Times and Siena College poll, released Saturday, shows Harris maintaining a slim lead in Wisconsin (49% to Trump’s 47%), but a statistical dead heat in Michigan (48% to Trump’s 47%). This marks a notable shift from August, when Harris held a four-point lead in both states.
Trump’s strength appears to stem from voter concerns about the economy, with over 25% of respondents citing it as their most important issue. Voters in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Ohio favor Trump over Harris in handling the economy by a significant margin (54% to 42%).
While both candidates face their own challenges, 32% of voters expressed concerns about Trump’s “behavior,” while 30% cited Harris’ “honesty and personality” as their biggest concern.
Adding to the uncertainty, separate polls conducted by Fox News and CNN/SSRS show a tight race in North Carolina, a state Trump won in both 2016 and 2020. Both polls, released Friday, found Trump and Harris locked in a statistical tie.
Further complicating the race in North Carolina is the controversy surrounding Republican gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson, who is trailing his Democratic opponent by double digits. Robinson, who has faced accusations of racist and sexist remarks, has been warmly endorsed by Trump, who expressed uncertainty about whether he would pull his support.
The polls highlight a growing sense of pessimism among swing state voters, with over 40% believing the country is at risk of “failing as a nation.”
While Harris still holds a narrow lead in some key states, the tightening race and the uncertainty surrounding Robinson’s candidacy suggest that the 2024 presidential election is shaping up to be a closely contested battle.
