Mon Sep 30 04:26:44 UTC 2024: ## DMK’s Udhay Stalin Appointed Deputy Chief Minister, Cementing Succession Plan

Chennai, August 14, 2023: In a move that has solidified the DMK’s succession plan, Udhayanidhi Stalin, son of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, has been appointed Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The announcement comes after a meteoric rise within the party, witnessing four promotions in just four years.

Udhay, as he is popularly known, first entered the political scene in 2018, leading a protest against bus fare hikes. Within a year, he was designated a “star campaigner” for the DMK during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and soon after, appointed the youth wing secretary. This swift ascent, unprecedented within the Karunanidhi family, saw him elected to the assembly in 2021 and later inducted into the cabinet as Sports Minister.

Despite the speed of his elevation, Udhay has garnered support within the party, largely due to his active campaigning and work with the youth wing. He also gained national attention with his strong stance against Sanatana Dharma, a statement that sparked controversy but further solidified his political presence.

While some question his commitment to Dravidian ideology, party leaders point to his work in strengthening the youth wing and his active involvement in government schemes. His campaign tactics, including holding a brick to criticize the AIADMK-BJP alliance, were widely popular, demonstrating his understanding of public sentiment.

With Udhay now holding the crucial position of Deputy Chief Minister, he is poised to play a key role in the upcoming 2026 elections and ultimately, the future of the DMK. His appointment is a clear indication that the party is preparing for a smooth transition of leadership, cementing the Stalin family’s dominant role in Tamil Nadu politics.
