Mon Sep 30 17:50:20 UTC 2024: ## India Eyes Global Recognition for Geological Sites, Bill in Works to Protect Heritage

**New Delhi:** The Indian government is working to secure international recognition for the country’s rich geological heritage, with 10 sites currently being considered for inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This comes as India is actively pushing for legislation to protect these valuable geological sites.

Mines Secretary V.L. Kantha Rao highlighted that while India boasts around 100 geo-heritage sites, including 32 recognized as National Geological Monuments, there is currently no legislation specifically dedicated to their protection. However, the “Geo Heritage Sites and Geo-relics Bill, 2022” is currently under review, aimed at safeguarding these crucial sites.

Mr. Rao further emphasized the need for greater awareness of India’s geological treasures, which are often celebrated as tourist attractions without acknowledging their scientific significance. He cited examples like the Lunar crater in Maharashtra, Bhedaghat in Madhya Pradesh, and Gandikota gorge in Andhra Pradesh, all sites that hold immense geological value.

India is also actively pursuing recognition of its geo-heritage sites through the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS). With the aim of boosting awareness and conservation efforts, the government hopes to see at least two geoparks in India receive international recognition within the next few years.
