**Sacramento, CA** – California Governor Gavin Newsom has vetoed a bill that would have required warning labels on all gas stoves sold in the state. Assembly Bill 2513, passed by the legislature earlier this month, aimed to inform consumers about the health risks associated with gas stove emissions, including nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and benzene.

The bill’s proponents, led by Assemblymember Gail Pellerin, cited studies linking gas stove emissions to increased cases of childhood asthma and other respiratory problems. A Stanford University study found that long-term exposure to nitrogen dioxide from gas stoves likely contributed to 50,000 current pediatric asthma cases.

The proposed warning label would have clearly stated the health risks and recommended ventilation during use.

However, Governor Newsom expressed concern about the bill’s “highly prescriptive” language and the potential for outdated information. He argued that the label’s content could only be updated through further legislation, hindering the ability to reflect evolving scientific understanding.

“While I appreciate the author’s intent to provide consumers with information about the products they purchase, I am concerned that this bill codifies highly prescriptive labeling content that could only be changed by a future statutory amendment,” Newsom stated in his veto message.

Environmental activists expressed disappointment with the veto, arguing that consumers deserve to be fully informed about the risks of gas stove pollution.

“Gas stove emissions increase the risk of childhood asthma and other respiratory problems, but most people are unaware of this threat,” said Jenn Engstrom, director of the California Public Interest Research Group. “Consumers deserve the truth when it comes to the danger of cooking with gas.”

Despite the setback, Engstrom emphasized their commitment to educating Californians about the risks associated with gas stoves and empowering them to make informed choices for their homes.
