Daniele was a standout athlete and scholar, having recently earned a Master’s degree in agriculture with distinction. Her athletic career at Cal Poly spanned five seasons, from 2020 to 2024, during which she made a significant impact on the team. She holds the school record for the fastest indoor 200-meter sprint, clocking in at 24.69 seconds, and ranks second all-time in the indoor 60m and 100m, with a personal best of 11.58 seconds in the latter.
Daniele was also a consistent performer on the national stage, claiming second place in the 200m at the Big West Championships in 2024. Her final race for Cal Poly was at the NCAA West Preliminaries in Arkansas on May 23, where she finished 43rd in the 200m.
Beyond her athletic achievements, Daniele was known for her strong leadership and character. She was a six-time All-Big West honoree, a two-time Big West champion, and a team captain. “She was an exceptional student-athlete on the Cal Poly track and field team for five years,” the school stated. “She cared deeply for those around her, had a remarkable heart and was a role model for so many.”
The Cal Poly Athletics community is deeply saddened by Daniele’s passing. “Shelby was truly one of a kind and will be missed dearly by everyone in the Cal Poly community,” the team wrote on Instagram. “Our condolences go out to her family and friends.”
