Sun Sep 29 14:16:18 UTC 2024: ## England Introduces Equal Starting Salaries for Men and Women in Cricket

**London, UK:** The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has announced a groundbreaking move towards gender equality in cricket, introducing equal starting salaries for men and women across all professional domestic cricket levels starting next year.

This decision applies to both “Rookie” and “Senior Pro” levels. The “Rookie” level, newly introduced for women, marks the first professional contract for players, while “Senior Pro” designates established players on first teams.

The equal pay structure, approved by the ECB’s Professional Game Committee, represents a significant shift in the professional landscape. The committee includes representatives from First-Class Counties, the Professional Cricketers’ Association, and the ECB itself.

This move is part of the ECB’s broader restructuring of the women’s professional game, which includes aligning the men’s and women’s professional white-ball competitions.

Director of Women’s Professional Game, Beth Barrett-Wild, highlighted the importance of this change: “Equalising starting salaries across our men’s and women’s professional domestic game is another positive step forward for women’s cricket in England and Wales.” She emphasized that the restructuring aims to create a sustainable and attractive environment for women’s cricket, both on and off the field.

The new structure also requires the eight First-Class Counties with tier-one status to maintain a minimum squad size of 15 contracted players with a salary cap of 800,000 pounds per year. Furthermore, these counties must invest at least 500,000 pounds in their player salary costs in 2025.

This significant step towards gender equality in English cricket is set to pave the way for a more balanced and rewarding future for women players. The ECB’s commitment to equal pay reflects a growing recognition of the importance of creating a fair and equitable playing field for all, regardless of gender.
