**Kochi, India** – A second case of mpox, also known as monkeypox, has been confirmed in Kerala, India. The latest case involves an Ernakulam resident who tested positive for the virus on Friday. According to Kerala Health Department sources, the patient’s condition is stable and they are currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
The strain of the mpox virus in this case is yet to be determined. This comes after the first case was reported in Kerala on September 18th, involving a man who had recently returned from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Following the confirmation of the first case, the Union Health Ministry issued an advisory on Thursday, urging all states and union territories to implement measures against the virus. The advisory highlighted the importance of isolation for suspected mpox cases and the enforcement of strict infection prevention and control measures.
The Kerala Health Department has also issued an advisory, emphasizing the similarity between the clinical presentation of mpox clade I and II in adults, while cautioning that clade I infections may carry a higher risk of complications.
The Health Department has provided protocols for clinical management, infection prevention practices, and a risk communication strategy, alongside a list of laboratories equipped for mpox testing. Health Secretary Apurva Chandra stressed the importance of implementing key public health measures to curb the spread of mpox nationwide.
