Riley Keough, actress and daughter of Lisa Marie Presley, has revealed that she believes her mother’s death was partly caused by the grief she carried following the 2020 suicide of her son, Benjamin Keough.

While Lisa Marie Presley’s official cause of death was a small bowel obstruction following bariatric surgery, Riley shared in a recent interview with People that she and her family knew the pain of losing Benjamin had a profound impact on her mother.

“My mom tried her best to find strength for me and my younger sisters after Ben died, but we knew how much pain she was in,” Riley explained. “My mom physically died from the after effects of her surgery, but we all knew she died of a broken heart.”

Lisa Marie Presley had been open about the devastating impact of Benjamin’s death, writing in a 2022 essay for People that her and her daughters’ lives were “completely detonated and destroyed” by his passing.

Riley is now preparing to release a posthumous memoir by her mother, “From Here to the Great Unknown”, which will be published on October 8th. The book promises an intimate glimpse into the Presley family and Lisa Marie’s own struggles with grief, heartbreak, and addiction.

“Her hope with this book was just human connection,” Riley said of her mother’s intention. “I hope that in an extraordinary circumstance people relate to a very human experience of love, heartbreak, loss, addiction and family.”
