Actor-director Sachin Pilgaonkar, who served as an assistant director on the iconic film Sholay, has revealed a surprising detail about its production. In a recent interview, Pilgaonkar disclosed that director Ramesh Sippy primarily focused on directing the film’s main stars, Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, and Sanjeev Kumar. The rest of the film, including many action sequences, was handled by a second unit led by stunt filmmaker Mohammed Ali and action director Azim, with additional assistance from Hollywood experts Jim and Jerry.
Pilgaonkar shared that Sippy recognized his and Amjad Khan’s growing interest in directing and entrusted them with managing the film’s scenes when the main stars weren’t shooting. He humorously likened this to “a blind man asking for one eye but unexpectedly receiving two.”
This revelation sheds new light on the making of Sholay, which remains a cherished classic in Indian cinema. It underscores the collaborative nature of filmmaking, highlighting the contributions of various individuals beyond the main director. The film’s success, therefore, is not solely attributed to Ramesh Sippy but also to the dedication and hard work of the entire crew, including the second unit and those who stepped up to take on directorial responsibilities.
