**Mumbai, India** – Sholay, the iconic 1975 Indian film, has been a cultural phenomenon for generations. But a recent revelation has added another layer to the movie’s legacy. Actor Sachin Pilgaonkar, who played Ahmed in the film, has revealed that he and the legendary Amjad Khan, who played Gabbar Singh, secretly directed several sequences.
Pilgaonkar, who was also the assistant director on Sholay, revealed in an interview that director Ramesh Sippy only directed scenes featuring the lead actors – Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, and Sanjeev Kumar. To handle the action sequences without the main stars, Sippy established a second unit with stunt director Mohammed Ali and action director Azim, who brought in Hollywood experts Jim and Jerry.
Sippy, recognizing Pilgaonkar and Khan’s interest in directing, entrusted them with the responsibility of representing him on set. “He asked us if we liked to represent him. Andha maange ek aankh, suddenly usko do mil gaya (the blind man asked for one eye, but suddenly he got two),” Pilgaonkar shared.
This revelation includes the iconic train robbery sequence, which was largely shot without Sippy present. “He was supposed to come only when Dharamji, Amitji and Hari bhai (Sanjeev) had work. Rameshji shot those portions, and we handled the remaining scenes,” Pilgaonkar explained.
The news has come as a surprise to fans, showcasing the hidden talents of the cast and crew of Sholay. It adds another layer of depth to the already beloved film, revealing a collaborative effort beyond the usual credit roll.
Pilgaonkar is currently enjoying the success of his latest Marathi film, “Navra Maza Navsacha 2”, a sequel to his 2004 hit. The film, which he also directed, is a box office hit, featuring a star-studded cast including Supriya Pilgaonkar, Swapnil Joshi, Hema Ingle, Ashok Saraf, Siddharth Jadhav, and Nirmiti Sawant.
