An anonymous source, identified as “N” and believed to be from the IDF’s Southern Command, has accused the Israeli military of conducting investigations that are “almost every” time far from the truth and motivated by a strategy of “guarding one another.” This explosive claim was made during an unofficial civilian probe into the events of October 7, 2023, which the committee leading the probe described as “the biggest security failure in the state’s history.”

N, who described himself as an expert in investigations due to the nature of his job, highlighted several instances where he felt the integrity of the IDF investigations was compromised. One example involved the investigation of a commander who was due for a promotion by IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi. N pointed out the inherent conflict of interest in having the very person who was supposed to be promoting the commander lead the investigation into his performance.

He further illustrated this point with another investigation where he was expected to be questioned but was not. N claimed that he was told the investigation had to protect the Major-General in charge, suggesting a deliberate attempt to shield high-ranking officers.

Regarding the performance of the Israel Air Force on October 7, N argued that there was insufficient time to deploy air support due to the rapid advance of Hamas terrorists. He highlighted the speed at which Hamas forces breached the border, stating that it took them less than two minutes to reach key locations and initiate attacks. According to N, this left little time for the command to respond and call in the air force.

The civilian probe, which was announced in July and comprises security and legal experts, is investigating the events leading up to October 7, with the aim of laying the groundwork for a state probe, a request that was rejected by the Israeli political establishment.

The IDF has yet to respond to a request for comment regarding these serious allegations.
